Farcical scenario (Roddy Nicolson)
I’ve just had a look at the Shetland Charitable Trust minutes of the meeting held on 6th July. That meeting was a travesty.
I have been a member of various committees myself. In no meeting anywhere have I ever heard of a committee member attending, but then making it clear at the beginning that he or she had no intention of taking part in the meeting. The scenario is farcical. In this case the proper course of action would have been for the chairman to ask Frank Robertson to remove himself from the committee.
Then when John Scott left the meeting it should have been declared inquorate as Mr Robertson shouldn’t have been there. But he was then counted after the meeting had started as part of the quorum after the departure of Mr Scott. It’s as if they were making a substitution at a football match! You couldn’t make it up.
Billy Fox is quite right to bring this state of affairs to the attention of the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. This meeting must surely have been a breach of standards.
Most of the committee members of the Shetland Charitable Trust are incapable of managing the trust. This also applies to the councillors on the Shetland Islands Council, most of whom are also incapable of managing the council.
The local council elections next May can’t come soon enough.
