Coastguard campaign nominated for award
The campaign which helped save Lerwick’s coastguard station from closure earlier this year has been nominated for a top award.
The successful effort which attracted thousands of supporters is one of three candidates in the running for The Herald‘s public campaign of 2011 – one of the eight categories in the newspaper’s Scottish Politician of the Year awards.
The strength of feeling forced the UK government to perform a U-turn on its decision to close Lerwick or Stornoway and leave the surviving station to operate only in daylight hours.
The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Edinburgh on 10th November.
