Enough is enough (Gail McMillan)

When is this going to come to an end: the use of the public purse? Another near-on £7 million of Shetlanders’ money scuttled in the Nort Mooth.

Why is it the public never hear about what the council has spent until it goes belly-up? I dread to think how many belly-ups the council has had.

I think the time has come for Josie Simpson, our political leader, to come clean on how much and where the council has Shetlanders’ money outstanding.

Shetland has become another Sicily, which was or is run by the Mafia, and once more Shetland will probably be the laughing stock of the world.

Is it not a bit brass-necked of the council to even mention the word “tunnel”, when all these cuts to services are going on? Get a life, you lot in the town hall. If you are going to spend our money spend it where it is desperately required at this given time. As one councillor stated, the money could have gone to more needy outlets, such as the hostels, the pensioners’ lunch clubs, bus stations etc. And finally, how many millions of our money has been written off in the last, let’s say, two decades?

Enough is enough! The residents of Shetland have had it with the SIC and its many blunders. The time has come for the SIC to get the Shetland Charitable Trust cheque book out, withdraw the Shetlanders’ money from the charitable trust, and use the cash on some of the more needy causes. After all, the money is there for the Shetland population.

Well said Gail! The people who made these blunders should be held personally accountable. The money they lost with the Bressay Bridge debacle was nothing short of a disgrace. And who suffers? The old people who lose their services, The kids who lose their music lessons etc, and the isles folk who suffer school closures, ferry fare hikes and the possibility of having to pay to send their kids to the hostels in Lerwick because there is no alternative. And then there’s Mareel……….! Don’t get me started on that one!!

I fully concur with Gail and Colin regarding the appalling state in which this Council has been using ‘ Shetland Money for Shetland People ‘, in various investments or paying compensation to relevant bodies because of badly managed expenditure of funds allocated to the Charitable Trust without looking further than their noses in terms of the implications involved if such investments, as Gail expresses, go ‘ belly-up’. Like many things in our blameless society, nobody takes responsibility for anything these days unless expensive legal action is taken……and of course we all know who benefits from this…..the lawyers, solicitors etc etc who design such legislation so as they are the only benefactors, financially, from any action taken as a consequence of such legislation. The Compensation Society has been drafted up by the legal profession so as they profit from it without ever applying any form justice of any kind at all. The disturbing irony of such legislation is the hypocrisy of it in how the rules and laws, previously drafted up, can be, conveniently, broken or bent to suit whatever law breaking is required so as such compensation can be applied for. A good example of this is the Tax Laws and the many loop-holes that can be gone through where people, namely the rich and well off, can avoid paying tax at all, but still manage to run their business in this country.
