Clickimin Loch path (Dylan Morrish)

Do you like walking? Around the Clickimin loch? Well how would you feel if we had a brand new Clickimin loch path?

This path has done us well for 8-9 years but isn’t it time for us to say give us a new loch path. Now some time last year a bit of the bridge broke off and ever since they have stuck a barricade at both sides saying “Do not go on this bridge”. It might not be that safe but they could make it safer and if they do both these things it would increase the number of people walking.

Fair enough they are trying to make cutbacks but this would help Shetland lots. Take the Clickimin broch for instance. It could be done up and made all nice. They could make the broch which is a lovely piece of history and turn it into a great piece of history. They could make it all pretty but they won’t.

Next time you go for a walk take a walk around the loch and you will see what I mean. Just ask yourself who is the most likely to make these changes for the good of our safety and for the Shetland islands …

It would be more like sense if the Council actually spent money doing up something which people would actually use, rather than throwing it into various ill thought out money pits as they have been doing. Such things as the bridge to Bressay that never was and never will be, the “New” Anderson High school which has yet to be built…….still! At least the AFB have managed to get Mareel built, even if it isn’t open yet! Another monumental waste of money!

Anywhere else that is trying to attract tourists and had a loch like the clickimin in the middle of their town would be doing a lot more than renovating the path, the loch is an amenity where not too much money could go a long way. There could be punts, canoes, topper sailing boats, fishing. With a small fee attached it could even make a profit as long as the council don’t get carried away and spend millions.

Would there ever be a better place for volunteers to work and improve. I could easily give 1000 Shetland grown, Grey Willow cuttings, plenty of doggy dodas on site as phosphate fertilizer. A small amount of stock fencing, the only cost. A bit of help from those on community service and there we go, Lerwick’s first nature woodland and wetland reserve. Compliment the campsite and leisure center perfectly.

Dylan, have a look round my wilde life croft. A few nest boxes, a few trees, just had my favorite Starling (the one on video) smudged by a Sparrow Hawk! That is life! Flawton Wildlife Croft ZE2 9LX
