Teams battle for Madrid Cup qualification
The league stage of senior football’s Madrid Cup competition is well under way with the three Lerwick teams all looking favourites to finish in the top four and qualify for the semi-finals.
Thistle had a hard-won 2-1 victory over Delting at Brae on Friday night and have now completed their six matches with 10 points. Bradley McKenzie and Garry Teale scored for the jags with Leighton Flaws replying for the home side.
Celtic and Spurs, with one game apiece remaining, are at the top of the league with 13 and 10 points respectively.
Whitedale had a 6-0 win over Scalloway on Friday, with goals from Jordan Morrison (two penalties), Piotr Drozdowski (2), Lorne McNiven and Richard Sinclair, and are now on four points from four matches.
The West Siders, Whalsay and Delting could all theoretically join the Lerwick teams in the semi-finals although the latter, having only completed two games, are best placed to make the last four.
Tonight’s matches, which all kick off at 6.45pm, are Delting v Celtic at Brae, Scalloway v Spurs at Fraser Park and Whitedale v Whalsay at Strom Park.
Meanwhile in the G&S Flooring Premier League Celtic bounced back from their defeat to Ness by beating Spurs 4-2 on Friday. Connor Regan (2), Ryan Stewart and James Aitken were on target for the hoops with Connel Gresham replying with a brace for Spurs.
Tonight’s league match sees Thistle take on Ness United at Clickimin South, again with a 6.45pm kick-off.
