Valium man caught with locking knife

A man who admitted to having a locking knife in his possession was returned to prison when he appeared from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court today.

Procurator fiscal Duncan MacKenzie said that Kieran Roberts, 25, of Sandside, Firth, was found wandering aimlessly with his eyes closed in Lerwick’s South Lochside by police on 15th June after reports that he was sleeping in a bus shelter. He was apparently under the influence of valium.

Roberts was searched and the knife was found. He said in mitigation that he had found the knife and intended to hand it in to the police station, but he had been moving in the opposite direction.

At the time of the incident Roberts had only just been released from prison, having been let out early from a sentence due to end in November 2013.

Sheriff Philip Mann deferred sentence until 26th July for reports, and remanded Roberts in custody.
