Architects win awards as standard of profession in Northern Isles is praised

Two Shetland building projects were winners in the 2012 Inverness Architectural Association Awards (Northern Isles) while two others received commendations.

Da Vadill, the Richard Gibson Architects flats development at Grantfield in Lerwick for Hjaltland Housing Association, was the winner in the new buildings category.

Another Richard Gibson Architects housing project for Hjaltland, Grodians at Quoy in Lerwick, was the winner in the place making category.

Redman & Sutherland Architects was commended for two of its entries – alterations to a croft house at Cullivoe in Yell in the new life for old buildings category and plans for houses at Fullaburn in Bressay in the innovation category.

The restoration of a tiny pier house at Ness Road in Stromness, by Maurice Davidson of Orkney Architects, won the new life for old buildings category, while the restoration of the House at Brough in Westray by Mark Fresson of Archial was commended in this category.

The awards were presented by Mark Williams of the association at an event in the former St Ninian’s shop on Commercial Street on Friday night. Mr Williams paid tribute to the high standard of the architecture on display.

The judges were Orkney architect Peter Finnigan, retired SIC architect Barbara Dinnage and Shetland Times editor Paul Riddell.
