Fog leads to cancellation of forum event with BT Scotland boss

Thick fog has forced the cancellation of a planned meeting of the Northern Isles digital forum, which had been due to be held today.

BT Scotland’s director Brendan Dick was to visit the isles to answer criticism about slow broadband connections. However the fog at Sumburgh has caused disruption to incoming flights.

The meeting had been organised by isles MP Alistair Carmichael. A spokesman from his office said BT had agreed to come up on another occasion, and that efforts were underway to pin down an alternative date “as a matter of urgency”.

This morning’s scheduled service to Aberdeen at 8.20am was cancelled after the earlier flight from there had to turn back. Other arrivals from Aberdeen and Edinburgh are currently delayed, but the mail plane has failed to arrive in the isles.

Only delayed flights to Edinburgh and Kirkwall/Inverness have so far been able to take off from Sumburgh this morning.

I wonder if Mr Dick considered doing a video conference, but thought that the Shetland weather was more predictable than the quality of the broadband connection required for the video stream?

    Indeed Graeme

Shame he couldn’t make it up since yet again the Broadband connection is on it’s nose, he could have experienced at first hand what we have to continually put up with.
