Memories are made of this (Lucy Peterson)
On reading your paper recently I was astounded and surprised that the council is contemplating the closing of Freefield Centre.
On my visits to Shetland I enjoyed going there and meeting old and new friends. We had a nice three-course dinner plus tea and biscuits and a nice group of ladies who did the cooking. It was interesting to meet folk from the country and have a chat with them and find out where they were from.
I live in the sooth noo but I’m a Lerwick lass and the Freefield area was where I was born – just behind where the centre is now there was a row of cottages called the Kondike Cottages, and on the corner was the Coffee House, which had a walkway with a railing in front and an overhanging veranda like in a western film.
Another outing was to the restaurant at the fisheries college in Scalloway where there was a good menu of fish etc and where we had our last school reunion.
So please council, would you reconsider this matter, so that on my next visit I won’t be disappinted.
