DJ gig on Saturday will not happen at Mareel
The DJ Kutski concert scheduled for Saturday will “regrettably” not take place at the new cinema and music venue Mareel, Shetland Arts said today.
The organisation said that local promoter Klub Revolution was currently considering whether or not the event would have to be “cancelled, postponed or relocated”.
A spokesman said: “Shetland Arts apologises to ticket-holders and Klub Revolution for the inconvenience caused by this event no longer taking place in Mareel. Please look at the Shetland Box Office website for further news.
“Full practical completion of Mareel is imminent and we expect to put tickets on sale for films and other events in the next couple of weeks. Please check the Shetland Arts website and the Shetland Box Office for updates.”

Mareel, as expected by myself amongst many, has proved to be a nightmare of delay, dithering and exposed its inept management to be truly incompetent on so many levels. Time and again, in the full knowledge of its endless construction problems events have been scheduled only to be cancelled or relocated. What kind of fools can endlessly and remorselessly advertise and promise events only to fail to deliver again and again and again? What kind of idiots employs staff to man an empty building, whom is paying their wages? And with who’s money? If this was a commercial undertaking it would have failed long ago, whoever was responsible for this farce would long ago been dismissed. Now will someone answer my question “Has anyone got the balls to say just how much over budget Mareel is, and whom is paying all those employed in this white elephant, whom to date have been able to entertain and serve only themselves?” As I previously stated this Mareel undertaking has become no more than a folly and an embarrassment to Shetland.

What a shame for all concerned. So excited though that the Choral Society will rehearse at Mareel and perform there this season. Can hardly wait for the music venue and the singing (of course).

I remember a time in shetland when there was no shetland arts trust,
people made there own music, went to the local halls, musicians from various parts of the country just turned up, word went about and a good time was had by all.
There was no hordes of people getting big wages then and arty stuff going around then most people have no interest in,
what a pity it was not like that know, imagine the money the SIC could save and put to better use.

Well said Stephen!
If this ethos had been maintained then perhaps we wouldn’t be worrying about our schools, daycare services, lifeline ferry services and winter road gritting.
On a lighter note da Mareel will be a super place for Shetland’s young folk tae perform… shame they won’t know how to because they won’t have received music tuition as that’s been cut too… and yet they can justify the funding of a venue that I can see beig subsidised from day 1 and on.
sad times!

Creative arts are created by individuals and groups of truly creative people. Arts centres are purely for the benefit of those without an ounce of creative talent. Producers, exploiters and pretentious clowns trying for an income on the backs of others. ? Good luck Shetland arties and Mareel acolytes, you are going to need it! I do love to rant, do I not, george kippets, but am I wrong? Everything I said about Mareel to date has been proven to be true, so rant on Tink. I do hope I am wrong about Mareel but if past performance is anything to go by!!
