140 oil platform workers evacuated after gas leak
An investigation is under way after workers were evacuated from a North Sea oil platform 109 miles north-east of Lerwick following a gas leak yesterday. They were taken to nearby installations after the alarm was raised on the North Cormorant platform at about 5am.
Operators Taqa Bratani said the platform was shut down as a precaution, along with neighbouring Eider and Tern feeder installations.
No-one was injured in the leak, and the company said the cause was not yet known.
The operators said 92 non-essential crew of the total of 202 personnel were transferred to other installations, while 38 were flown to shore.
Two helicopters from Scatsta were involved in the evacuation.
