Shoppers donate £1,900 of food to parcel appeal

The Salvation Army has been “bowled over” by the generosity of shoppers who donated more than £1,900 of goods to a food parcel appeal.

Visitors to Tesco at the weekend responded with enthusiasm when they were asked to give long-life items to the festive appeal.
A food bank ran at the front of the store throughout Saturday and Sunday.

In the end enough food was gathered to fill dozens of banana boxes – something the Salvation Army’s commanding officer for Lerwick, Angela Nunn, said was “astounding”.

The donated goods will be used to fill food parcels distributed by the organisation to people who have fallen on hard times.

In October it emerged demand for the scheme had seen a major increase, with 86 bundles of food being shared around 132 people over a 10-month period.

“I’m absolutely astounded at how generous people have been. It’s fantastic,” said Mrs Nunn.

She paid tribute to members of staff at Tesco who had given up their own time to man the appeal.

“I’ve been completely bowled over by the generosity of the public and staff. It’s something like 89 banana boxes of food. That is a lot of food, and it will make up a lot of extra food parcels for Christmas.”
