Clavel featured as film club goes out and about to show movies with a difference

Shetland Film Club will be taking to the road for nine days from tomorrow in support of Shetland Arts’ Screenplay festival.

The club has supported the festival since its inception, providing screenings for those who cannot easily get into Lerwick, and films with a difference from the usual blockbusters for school pupils.

It will be visiting schools in Sandwick, Symbister, Baltasound and Foula, showing short films made by children for last year’s Hansel of Film project.

James Robert Sinclair, of Clavel, will be the star of the film Clavel, made by Shona Main, which the club will be screening for the residents of Overtonlea and the Fernlea Wishart Anderson Centre. The club will also be presenting screenings of family films at Foula and at Fetlar Hall.

Stuart Hubbard of Shetland Film Club said: “We’ve been supporting Screenplay since 2007 when it first started. Although we no longer run a regular club for members now that Mareel is open, we still want to provide a service for the community whenever we can. We want as many people as possible to celebrate film in all its diversity during the annual festival.”

The roadshow is funded by the National Lottery Awards for All and by the Shetland Arts Development Fund.

The club undertakes occasional screenings in care centres and community halls during the rest of the year, but Mr Hubbard pointed out that they could do so much more if they had more volunteers.

He added: “If anyone would like to help us provide a service for those who cannot get to the cinema, please get in touch with us – we’d love to hear from you.”

Stuart can be contacted on (01950) 477235 or at [email protected].
