Shetland footballers through to next round of North Caledonian Cup

The Shetland county football team defeated Thurso on penalty kicks in the first round of the North Caledonian Cup on Saturday.

The home side took the lead but Calvin Leask equalised for Shetland, both goals coming in the first half of the match.

The score remained 1-1 until full time and after extra time the teams were still level.

Both teams scored from their first three penalty kicks and Shetland made it 4-3 before keeper Erik Peterson made a decisive save. It was left to Leask to hit the winning kick to make it 5-3.

Shetland will play Golspie Sutherland in the next round of the cup, with the match again to be played on Thurso’s home ground.

Other results on Saturday were: Orkney 2, Halkirk United 3; Muir of Ord Rovers 3, Golspie Sutherland 4; Alness United 6, Sutherland United 1.
