Spanish fishermen airlifted to Lerwick

Shetland Coastguard went to the aid of a Spanish fishing vessel which reported a fire at 5am.

Rescue helicopter 102 was dispatched to the Espemar 2, 100 miles west of Shetland, following a call from the Madrid Coastguard. Two crewmen suffering from smoke inhalation were airlifted from the vessel and brought back to the Clickimin landing site by 7.40am.

The men were taken to the Gilbert Bain Hospital by ambulance.

Meanwhile the master deemed the vessel safe to carry on fishing.

    There is a Coastguard Station in Madrid? I knew there was something wrong with my charts.

      Shhhh Malcolm… if the ConDem government hears about the Madrid Coastguard Station, they’ll try to close it.
