Vessel turns back in gale force winds

A stand-by vessel was forced to turn back to safety in gale force winds after bridge windows were smashed by a wave.

The Vos Iona was 65 miles south east of Sumburgh with 15 people on board when the incident happened at 2am, causing damage to some electrics and communications on the vessel.

She was able to turn around and head back to Lerwick, where she arrived at 9.30am. There were no injuries.

Also this morning the Sumburgh-based rescue helicopter was scrambled to the East Shetland Basin to evacuate a sick crewman from an off-shore installation.

The man was taken off the Brent Bravo platform 100 miles north east of Lerwick and was landed at the Clickimin site before being transferred to the Gilbert Bain Hospital for treatment.
