Learning from our mistakes (Andy Holt)

It was truly heart-warming to read in The Shetland Times (17th January) the account of the young man sent to prison for drug related offences but determined to turn his life around, give something back to the community and warn other young people of the dangers associated with that lifestyle choice.

Congratulations also must be due to Shetland Rugby Club for their courage and wisdom in offering support to him. However it seems not everyone is capable of learning from their past mistakes.

Just a few more pages into the same edition was the heart-chilling news that the SIC along with three other local authorities is to retain the services of a firm of Edinburgh Solicitors for an eye-watering £4.3 million pounds over two years. Our legal affairs department currently employs seven full-time and one part-time solicitor. Are they not capable of dealing with any issues that might arise? If not why are we employing them?

Have our councillors forgotten so soon the financially devastating choices to go to law made by members of previous councils which cost us all so dear. Please councillors, demonstrate to us beleaguered ratepayers that you have learned from past mistakes and reverse this crazy decision.
