Quality is the key (Geoff McCarron)
I cannot agree with the reasons put forward for the difficulty in the local dairy’s efforts to attract more customers to buy their milk as stated in last week’s Shetland Times.
Yes, the big supermarkets have huge buying power, and can massively discount milk without a blink, but, because their milk is filtered, it lasts way longer than the local stuff which seems to go off alarmingly quickly.
This to me is the real reason, as it seems a problem that not only has myself encountered, but to all those people that I have spoken to on this problem.
I will buy local produce first, and be happy to pay more, but you have to have the quality there. I won’t buy local milk which I myself have to pour down the sink a day after it has been opened and kept in the fridge. Solve this issue then see a bigger uptake.

I have been surprised to hear a few people complain about the milk going off too quickly as I have not had this problem myself and most of the people I work with don’t seem to have a problem either. It is lovely milk even after several days of sitting in my fridge. Speaking as a dairy farmers daughter I am very aware of the need to support our farmers and to thank them for all their hard work and so far I have no issues with supporting the shetland milk.

Some of the longer life milk is homogenised as well as filtered (whatever that means). Maybe too clean? Maybe I am just sounding like my parents who rued the day it was even pasteurised. No more milk and beast straight from da coo. Prohibited and harmful foodstuff nowadays I guess.

Like Sarah, I too have never had a problem with Shetland Dairies milk.
I have always bought locally produced milk, and will continue to do so, as I like it.
If your fridge is operating at the correct temperatures, local milk keeps for days and days.
“Use it or lose it”; Self-sufficiency would be a very good thing.
