Penalty shoot-out agony for footballers

The Shetland football team unfortunately lost on penalties in the semi-final of the North Caledonian League’s John Mackay Memorial Cup on Saturday.

The match against Golspie Sutherland was played at the Dammies ground in Thurso and it was the mainland side that took the lead in the first half.

Shetland fought back and late in the match James Farmer scored to force the game into extra time.

The sides could not be separated after the extra 30 minutes and it was Golspie Sutherland who triumphed, winning the dreaded penalty shoot-out 3-1.

The defeat was an added blow to the Shetland players as if they had got through they would have played Orkney in the final, the Orcadians defeating Inverness Clachnacuddin 4-1 in their semi-final.
