Police ‘positive’ after school break-in
Shetland police were said to be following “positive lines of inquiry” after a weekend break-in and theft that also caused widespread damage at Sound Primary School in Lerwick.
The school was targeted by thieves overnight between Friday and Saturday when, according to a police spokesman, numerous items including a quantity of money was stolen and “considerable damage” done to all parts of the school, including classrooms, kitchen and offices.
The spokesman added: “The person or persons responsible have made a concerted effort to target charity boxes, and fund-raising collections.
“This is being viewed as a drug related crime which is particularly selfish and harmful to our community. This act will have an adverse effect on the school children, the staff, and the local charities the school promote.”
He added that the police were keen to speak to anyone with knowledge of the incident, or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area. Police also wanted to “hear about any person who has recently taken receipt of money they are not accustomed to”.
The school was operating as normal today (Monday) with classes as usual. Some damage was caused to doors but the classrooms were not affected.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
