Extra-time drama in Senior Inter-County

Drama, passion and plenty of grit was on show as Shetland took on Orkney in this year’s Senior Inter-County.
In a five-goal thriller the Shetland football team showed plenty of character, after taking the lead early on through a tidy finish from Robert Smith.
But indecision in the dying embers of normal time meant an equaliser from Orkney, and then a second goal for the home team followed in the first 15 minutes of extra-time.
Shetland responded well though – with a thumping goal from Connor Regan after a driving run from captain Leighton Flaws, and a beauty from defender Shane Jamieson – an acrobatic volley to take the cup back home.
“When you go 2-1 down all of a sudden you’ve got to change your game,” said manager Niall Bristow,
“I think [with] Leighton [Flaws], that was such an important run into the box to set up that goal, it was maybe the best bit of quality we produced in the whole game.
“For maybe all it was a poor and scrappy game, the winning goal was worthy of winning any match.”
Shetland’s mixed hockey team were the first to compete, and fought strongly in an impressive midday opener.
The 1-0 victory came with a goal from Charlie Unsworth.
Sadly Shetland were unable to make it a clean sweep with the ladies team losing 4-1, although it was a battling performance with plenty of heart.
Despite the defeat, joint coach Jill Hibbert agreed there was still plenty to be proud of.
