Beaming Erraid Davies has captured the hearts of the nation after winning bronze in the Commonwealth Games.
Davies, 13, scraped another half second off her personal best to claim bronze in the Women’s Para-Sport category SB9 and on emerging from the pool was interviewed live on BBC television.
“I’m really, really happy,” the 13-year-old told Sharron Davies. Asked whether she had been spurred on by the backing of the home crowd the young star said: “Kind of, I could hear them in the last 25 [metres] so I just hammered it.”
She certainly did that – at the half way point Davies was a fair distance behind but she powered through the pool to become the youngest ever Scottish Commonwealth Games medallist. She finished in a time of 1 min 21.08 secs.
After the achievement Davies’ name was trending worldwide on Twitter as sports fans reacted to the superb performance.
“She’s going to be a star,” said Olympic medallist Rebecca Adlington.
