Lau adds Mareel gig to European tour

Award-winning modern folk trio Lau have included a Shetland date as part of a European tour next year.

The group is touring in support of a forthcoming album due for release in May. They will appear at Mareel in June.

Lau are Martin Green (accordion and electronics) Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle, fx) and Kris Drever, who lives in Shetland (vocals, guitars).

For a decade they have been stretching folk music’s boundaries and exploring new territory with each release and concert tour.
The 2012 Race the Loser album was nominated for Scottish Album of the Year and featured in many critics best of year lists. Lau appeared on BBC TV’s Later… with Jools Holland and won their fourth BBC Radio Folk Award for Best Group a few months later.

Lau has curated three weekend festivals called Lau-Land and collaborated with a myriad of musicians and in the last two years have travelled extensively all over the world. For their new album, the recordings are produced by Brooklyn-based artist and multi-instrumentalist Joan Wasser (Joan As Police Woman).

Lisa Ward, of Shetland Arts, said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming Lau back to Mareel for a gig in the new year. Their concert at Mareel last year, as part of Fiddle Frenzy 2013, was very popular.”
