Have your say over future of theatre
Theatre lovers are being invited to a public meeting organised by Shetland Arts to have their say on the future of the genre in Shetland.
The discussion will take place at The Garrison Theatre on Thursday 15th January and Shetland Arts’ general manager Graeme Howell said he was particularly keen to hear of ways the Garrison could be best used.
He said: “We are looking to enter into a discussion with interested parties about how best to encourage and support the development of theatre in Shetland. In particular, we want to discuss how the Garrison Theatre can be best used as a centre and springboard for that development.”
He added: “We’re keen to hear thoughts and suggestions from all corners and would encourage anyone interested in the topic to come along and let their voice be heard.”
The Garrison, was built in 1903/04. There has been criticism, from some quarters, that since Mareel opened the Garrison has been under used.
Next week’s discussion starts at 6pm. More on this story in Friday’s Shetland Times.

It has always been the elephant in the room. The future role of The Garrison should have been a part of the plans for The Mareel. I would certainly maintain it as a working theatre. It will be needed when the waters rise.

I’m not from Shetland but please allow me to participate in this discussion, because I’m interested in theatre and art in general. Spence Jamieson, I perfectly agree with you The Garrison Theatre should be maintained as a working theatre, because many people and artists in the likes of Richard Schechner already see the end of theatre, this article expands a bit more on the subject http://www.digitaljournal.com/a-and-e/arts/op-ed-the-future-of-theatre-is-this-the-final-curtain-call/article/421369
My point here is that with the rise of home entertainment and technology, things might seem a bit gloom for the future of theatre but if we give up so easily then yes it is sad but in a few years time we will lose this art and that would be a shame for future generations. So please maintain The Garrison as a working theatre. “Life is a theatre set in which there are but few practicable entrances” (V. Hugo)

Could not the Garrison become a future ” Great Hall” of Shetland College/UHI to be used in more-or-less its present form for a diversity of purposes?
