Remanded in custody over assault charges

A man has been remanded in custody until next week after being accused of several offences including assault on a police officer.

David McKinnon, 32, of Hoofields in Lerwick, appeared from the cells today before honorary sheriff Sandy Cluness.

He was charged with repeatedly attempting to bite a police officer on the body.

McKinnon was also accused of lashing out with his legs and struggling violently with police in an attempt to avoid being arrested, shouting, swearing and threatening violence as he did so.

The alleged offences at a house in Midgarth in Cunnigsburgh on 16th January were all said to have happened while McKinnon was on bail.

His case was continued without plea until next Wednesday. Bail was opposed.

Appearing alongside McKinnon were two co-accused – Kelly Ross, 37, of the town’s Ladies Drive and Carol Robertson, 42, of Cunningsburgh’s Midgarth.

Ross is charged with assaulting a police constable and kicking him on the head. She is also alleged to have caused an obstruction to police by standing between them and McKinnon, pulling him away from officers and attempting to prevent him from being arrested.

A further charge alleges she lashed out and struggled violently with police in a bid to avoid handcuffs being put on her, as well as shouting and swearing. The offences are said to have happened while she was on bail.

Meanwhile, Robertson is accused of shouting and swearing and failing to turn off a television set when asked to do so by police.

Ross and Robertson were released on bail until next week.
