Bristow smashes 10,000 metre record

Lerwick runner Katie Bristow has bagged a bronze medal at the Scottish 10,000 Metre Championships and shattered the Shetland record.
Bristow, 21, is in her final year of studying for a degree in social sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University.

She clocked up an impressive time of 36.04, shaving more than 90 seconds off the record held by Whalsay runner Michelle Sandison.

It was “quite a surprise”, to beat the record, says Bristow as it was her first 10k race on the track.

Bristow said running on the track in Glasgow was mentally pretty tough “you know at every single part in the race how far you’ve run and how far you have got to go, whereas in a road race you’re guessing because I wouldn’t wear a watch [for the distance].”

The young Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers runner also broke her personal best by more than a minute.

“I knew what the [Shetland] record was and my personal best was 37.10 on the road,” said Bristow.  “I knew if I could run how I did on the road I would break it but I didn’t really know how it was going to go on the track.”

But after seeing the time at the 5K mark and running strongly she knew she was in with a good chance.
