Cautious response to exit poll figures
A cautious response has been given by Conservative candidate Donald Cameron following an exit poll suggesting his party will be the largest in the Commons.
The survey taken at polling stations across the UK and conducted for the BBC, ITV and Sky claims the Tories will get 316 MPs when all the results have been counted.
Labour is predicted to get 239, the SNP 58, the Lib Dems 10, UKIP two and the Green Party two.
The target to form a majority is 326.
“I think one has to be cautious at this stage of the evening to read anything into this,” said Mr Cameron.
He added: “Clearly my hope is that the Conservatives have done as well as that but I suspect the result will be a lot more nuanced across various seats than this poll suggests.”
Cameron said it had been a great campaign in Orkney and Shetland and has been to 15 polling stations today from Sumburgh to Sullom Voe.
SNP candidate Danus Skene said the exit poll had to be taken with a pinch of salt at this stage.
“It clearly is confirmation that the opinion polls have not been telling us a complete kipper.
He said it had been a good campaign, though “there has been a sort of edginess and some personal stuff the last few days but nothing a grown up boy can’t live with.”
