Patrols to target dog fouling
Environmental health officials will increase patrols in a bid to target dog walkers who fail to scoop up their pet’s mess.
Environmental health team leader Patti Dinsdale said the issue of dog fouling remained a problem despite most dog owners being responsible.
“There are a small minority of owners who refuse to pick up after their dogs. Environmental health will be increasing patrols in problem areas to encourage owners to pick up and we’d encourage the public to help us by reporting offenders on (01595) 745250.
“The message is clear – bag it and bin it – any bin will do.”
Her message came as dog owners are being encouraged to attend an information event, offering free health checks by a vet, dog treats and information, stickers and advice.
The event, organised by Shetland Islands Council’s environmental health service, hopes also to attract local dog owners along to discuss topics such as dog fouling.
Ms Dinsdale said: “Dogs owners enjoy more time walking than non dog-owners and this can be a great form of exercise and stress management.
“We want to celebrate the fact that there are so many responsible dog owners in Shetland. I hope dog owners, including members of Shetland Dog Club, can drop in to this session to have their dog’s health checked and pick up some free dog treats and information.”
The event will take place on Wednesday between 11am and 3pm, at the Tesco car park near the bottle banks.
