Road remains closed after fatal crash

Police have named the 66-year-old man who died in a road traffic collision on the A970 near Cunningsburgh Hall yesterday as Michael Robertson, who was retired and lived in Sandwick.

The two vehicle collision between a car and a sports utility vehicle, which was towing a caravan, happened at around 3:27pm and emergency services were called. Mr Robertson, the driver of the silver Kia Picanto, was the only occupant of the car and died as a result of the collision.

The driver and two passengers in the black Toyota RAV4 were not injured.

Fire appliances from Lerwick, Sandwick and Scalloway attended and made the area safe.

The road will remain closed today (Monday) while a road traffic collision investigation is carried out by the Divisional Road Policing Unit. Local diversions via Aithsetter are in place and will be managed by local officers.

Police have asked for anyone with information about the incident to contact them on 101.
