Bruck Monster display reveals a ‘sense of reality’

Following the successful release of the Curse of the Bruck Monster film in Mareel and online, the Shetland Museum and Archives is hosting a display, including a series of bruck monster films and models used in the film.

The initial concept of the film was created by the Brae High School and Anderson High School pupil councils. It was carried out by local film maker JJ Jamieson and local animator Greg McCarron. The film was set in the 1950s, showing a American horror parody.

The actual bruck monster was handmade, which took weeks as it is very detailed. The monster will be on show at the museum outside the cafe bar until 23rd August.

Mr Jamieson said: “The monster took weeks but it was totally worth the wait, as it is now very effective. The monster, although it was just a concept, does has a sense of reality in it.

“Cecilia James walked an 18-mile road collecting litter, and what she collected is roughly the size of the bruck monster if you put it all together, which is an incredible amount of bruck.”

Shetland Amenity Trust marketing officer Emma Miller said: “The monster was highly effective. I hear people talk about how they are continually thinking about littering now.

“My friend now feels like when she goes for a walk then she should pick up the bruck – which is why we created this beast.”

It has now been asked that the film be played on an international littering campaign on a Facebook page.

Mr Jamieson said: “I was very, very pleased that it was asked to be played on this Facebook page. It is now being looked at so it has worked.”

Curse of the Bruck Monster had its very own premiere in front of all the school pupils who helped make it happen. It is also being played before all the films at Mareel for another few weeks.

Since they had to go along the road to collect the materials, I should try and make sure they will have a good supply next year.
