Custody for assault accused

A man accused of assault was remanded in custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court today.

Craig Thomas Homer, 29, whose address was given as Luss Avenue, Greenock, appeared from custody and pleaded not guilty to charges of assaulting a man to his injury in Lerwick on Saturday.

Homer was said to have punched a man on the head, pursued him and then repeatedly punched and kicked him on the head before knocking him down and repeatedly kicking him on Commercial Street and Burns Walk.

Tommy Allan said that his client could remember nothing of the incident and had lost his job. He appealed for Homer to be released on bail as he was keen to be south with his family for his daughter’s first day at school.

However, Sheriff Philip Mann said that given Homer’s very serious record, and the fact that he was already bailed for two offences and was facing a very serious charge that could end in imprisonment if he was found guilty, it would not be in the public interest to release him and there was a substantial risk that he might reoffend.

He was refused bail and will appear in court again on 3rd September.
