Inter-club regatta cancelled

This week’s Shetland Inter-Club Regatta which was due to start tomorrow has been cancelled following the death of two club stalwarts.

With funerals for Laurence Robertson and Ralph Pottinger to be held on Friday and Saturday the committee unanimously agreed to cancel the event, which was held for the first time in 1947.

It is the first time in its history that the regatta has been called off. Racing had been scheduled to begin tomorrow with events daily until Saturday.

Mr Robertson joined the committee in 1978 and retired in 2009. He was commodore in 1982-83 and became secretary in 1994. He held the latter post until stepping down in 2009.

Mr Pottinger was vice commodore, the second time he held the post. He joined the inter-club committee in 2002 and was commodore in 2008-09.
