Report due on Clickimin pool roof fault

An engineer’s report into the fixing of the Clickimin Centre swimming pool roof is expected tomorrow when an indication of when the pool, closed since 23rd July, will reopen should become apparent.

According to Shetland Recreational Trust general manager James Johnston the cost of repairs will then have to be discussed with contractor DITT, which has been assisting with the structural survey, though the work may have to go out to tender.

Following the repairs, it will be at least a fortnight before the pool can be reopened, meaning it will be closed to at least mid-September. Extensive scaffolding below the glazed roof, which extends to the pool itself and around the flumes and “river”, will have to be taken down and the pool cleaned up and refilled.

Mr Johnston said: “I am not expecting it to be a great amount of work….but we have to work out what we need to do and how long it will take to do it. Anything else is just speculation.”

The pool was closed as a safety precaution after part of a bolt fell from the glazed rood into the poolside river.

Mr Johnston added that there had been many rumours about the length of time before the pool would reopen but that would only be clear following the report and subsequent negotiations. Any work undertaken would have to represent “best value”.

Mr Johnston said that the public would be informed of the scale and duration of the work as soon as that information became available. In the meantime extended opening hours at the Scalloway pool would be maintained until the Clickimin pool reopened.
