Fire service called back to dump

The fire service was back at the Gremista landfill early this morning after it received a call that fire had broken out again.

One appliance from Lerwick attended the “small” fire, according to the Scottish fire and Rescue Service, arriving at 12.20am and had the fire “under control” by 1.35am.

Yesterday afternoon five engines were at the dump dousing the blaze which had started again after apparently being put out around 5.30pm on Wednesday. Two appliances from Lerwick and one each from Scalloway, Sandwick and Walls doused the rubbish tip with water and firefighters donned breathing apparatus.

It was hoped that rain this morning would finally damp down the smouldering rubbish, that yesterday send clouds of smoke over the north end of Lerwick.

● The Brae fire engine was called to a minor house fire at Voxter yesterday. The fire service was alerted at 4.26pm and the fire had been extinguished by the time the fire engine arrived shortly after. Only “very minor” damage had been caused in the kitchen.
