Monsters upstairs in Islesburgh

There are scary goings-on in Islesburgh this weekend as The Joker, The Mask and Darth Maul have moved in.

The colourful exhibition called Monsters Upstairs by Balazs Onhausz consists of ten giant oil paintings and runs until 1st November.

Film fan Onhausz held a similar exhibition at the community centre earlier this year including portraits of Sharon Stone, Tom Cruise and Bruce Willis.

Onhausz has lived in Shetland for about seven years and studied art in his native Hungary.

He turned to large oil painting after creating a portrait of his hero Kris Kristofferson, which the music star signed and was sold for £1,000 for charity following his visit to Lerwick last year.

After receiving a warm reception to his last exhibition, Onhusz is back presenting his work once more.

The vibrant and striking portraits took about ten hours each to complete.

And he said painting the green monster Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc was one of his most challenging pieces.

“The character is very easy but the skin took me more than the other ones for the detail,” he said.

Onhausz explained sometimes he sketched out an idea on the plywood beforehand, other times he would start with paint.

When he is painting Onhausz said “I’m looking forward to seeing the whole character” but admitted “as soon as I’ve got it then I start thinking about the next one.”

“I like the big size [of the paintings] because it looks better, it’s more powerful, it’s good for the show.”
