Funding in place for Fetlar wind turbines project
A community renewable energy project will be developed in Fetlar after its target of £223,000 was secured in time to meet last night’s deadline.
In just 35 days Fetlar Wind has managed to attract enough businesses and individuals to invest in the project which will see two turbines erected.
The two turbines will power the Fetlar Green Energy scheme, providing renewable heat and power to the local primary school and other connected buildings. Any surplus generated by Fetlar Wind will be donated to a local charity for use in supporting other community projects.
Project manager Robert Thomson said: “We are extremely grateful to everyone who has supported the project get it to this stage.
“The extremely short timescales imposed on us by changes to government legislation, both in relation to investment and the Feed in Tariff, have given us a real challenge, but one that we are now hopefully on course to meet.”
The turbines have to be installed and commissioned before 31st December to meet the Feed in Tariff deadline.

It’s a great shame that after waiting 6 years, the community of Fetlar still does not have the Community Poly-tunnel Project up and running, after many years of promises and obfuscation by the Fetlar Developments Ltd of which Robert is employed as the key worker. Land has now been offered by a local crofter but still no real effort has been put in by the Fetlar Developments Ltd, even though a large number of people wanted this project and thought of it as a way to bring the community together outside of the Fetlar hall events. Instead we are offered grandiose crazy schemes; including the farcical £80,000 electric minibus, that does not benefit most of the people on Fetlar. I will fly a flag the day the FDL closes its doors and leaves Fetlar alone!
