Storm Frank leaves a hole in the road
Part of the road at Seafield, Lerwick, was washed away by storm Frank yesterday.
The high winds and massive waves initially caused part of the sea wall to collapse, but the road was quickly undermined and a chunk of the narrow sea road is now missing.
The damage was first spotted by Seafield resident Chris Johnson, who warned neighbours Alan and Radina McKay around 2pm.
Mrs McKay said today: “Chris came to warn us about a hole in the wall supporting the road. We went along half an hour later and the road had collapsed. It had cracked so quickly. A massive piece of tar had been taken by the sea. Luckily it wasn’t dark.”
Mrs McKay praised the police and road services, who responded promptly and placed barriers and cones around the area. That piece of the road is now closed to traffic.
Four households are affected by the break in the road, but all are within distance of it and Mr McKay said it was only 10 minutes to the large “corner shop”.
The aftermath of the storm is evident along the road, which is littered with small stones. The larger boulders washed up yesterday have been removed.
