Traffic disruption during Up-Helly-A’

Police have issued a notice to remind drivers there will be disruption to traffic at various times and the Up-Helly-A’ festivities continue.

Up to about 11.30am, various roads in the town centre will be closed for a short time as the Jarl’s Squad forms in ranks for its various processions. Pauses in traffic flow will be kept as short as possible.

In preparation for the main evening parades, on the main parade route including Hill Head, Lower Hill Head, King Eric Street, St Olaf Street, Union Street, King Harald Street and Harbour Street, parking will be restricted during the day.

All drivers and local householders are asked to have their cars removed from the route by 4pm. Should vehicles be obstructing the route after that time, they may be removed and fees would be payable by the owner/driver to effect their return.

• Officers also wanted to make everyone aware that the use of drones will not be permitted during the procession and burning. The Up-Helly-A’ committee and police had received several enquiries, but legislation prevents drones being used in crowded areas.
