Morrison shouted ‘religiously offensive’ slogan at police

Shouting a “religiously offensive” remark at police and acting in a threatening or abusive manner cost a man £150 at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

Ross Robert Morrison, 43, of Union Street, Lerwick, admitted breaching the peace on 10th October by walking towards a police car and shouting while raising his hands.

The police officers got out of the vehicle and warned Morrison about his behaviour, but as he walked away, he threw his hands in the air again and shouted “up the RA”.

Procurator fiscal Duncan MacKenzie said: “We all know the slogan means ‘up the regular army’.”

Morrison said that it had been a “silly comment” and out of character for himself and he apologised for it.

Sheriff Philip Mann fined him £150 including £50 for the religiously aggravated element of the offence.
