Kirking precedes the real work for Scott
One of Tavish Scott’s first official duties after being returned to Holyrood as Shetland MSP is to attend the traditional kirking before the formal swearing in of MSPs tomorrow.
Today’s ceremony, which dates back to pre-union parliaments, will be held at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh and will reflect the religious diversity of the nation and those representing it.
Mr Scott said: “It is a great honour to serve in Parliament on behalf of people across Shetland. I look forward to meeting friends across politics today. This week the attention is on the parliament. Next week a government will be formed and ministers appointed.
“Then I can get to grips with the many issues that Shetland needs addressed. Cutting ferry fares, improving broadband and mobile phone coverage and investment in local schools.”
He said he was grateful for the “warm and supportive” reaction to his election win. “That gives me great strength in making Shetland’s case in Holyrood once debates and question time begins again.”
