Four P6 pupils at Sandwick Junior High School took part in yesterday’s national Euroquiz final at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh.

The final event of this year’s competition saw 31 school teams from across Scotland take part, each of whom had won the regional heats in their own areas.

The Sandwick team of Ruby Adamson, Willum Tulloch, Sophie Tait and Jake Cormack earned their place at the national finals by winning the local heats in February, just two points ahead of the team from Sound Primary School.

The Euroquiz competition is organised by the Scottish European Educational Trust (Seet) and encourages P6 pupils to learn about Europe and the European Union. Yesterday’s event, hosted at Heriot Watt University, saw pupils answering questions on geography, culture, history, general knowledge, language and how the EU works.

The final was won by St Mary’s Primary School in West Dunbartonshire with 81 points (out of a maximum of 95) and second place went to St Margaret’s Primary from Fife, with 75 points. The Sandwick team had a total score of 57, finishing 19th overall.

Teacher Clare Coghill, who travelled to Edinburgh with the team, said: “It’s been a fantastic experience for the four pupils and myself.

“They have worked really hard to prepare for the competition and learned a huge amount about Europe.

“It’s been great to share the experience with pupils and teachers from across Scotland.”

The Euroquiz programme in the isles is co-ordinated by Shetland Islands Council’s schools service.
