Shetland lead after first day of Junior Inter County
After the first day of competition at this year’s Junior Inter County it is Shetland who find themselves taking an early lead.
The first events of the day took place in the athletics category. Going into the final event of this section – the girls’ 4 x 100 relay – the leader at the halfway point of the first day remained in the balance.
Far from crumbling under the pressure, the Shetland lasses cruised to victory, setting a new Junior Inter County record of 50.3 seconds in the process.
This meant that after the conclusion of the athletics Shetland led Orkney by 49.5 points to 47.5.
The second and final event of the day was netball. In the netball, much as in the athletics, the teams were closely matched and the game was highly competitive. It was Shetland, though, who once again fought harder, eventually winning the 25 – 23.
This means that after the first day of events Shetland lead Orkney by four points.
The Junior Inter County will conclude tomorrow with swimming, hockey and football.
