Scammers target Voe householder
A man is claiming to have been targeted by scam callers, just a week after the council’s trading standards service issued a warning.
Ray Campbell, from Voe, smelt a rat after he received a call on Monday from someone purporting to be from the inland revenue.
His suspicions were raised after the caller asked for his address.
He is now reiterating a warning issued last week by trading standards team leader, David Marsh.
“They claim that they are from the revenue section,” said Mr Campbell.
“They wanted my name and insurance number. They said ‘what’s your address?’ I said, ‘you’ve got my phone number, you should know my address anyway’.
“I said to them, ‘this sounds a bit funny, so if you want details, send me a letter.'”
He ended the call and contacted the police to inform them of what had happened.
Last week trading standards warned people to be cautious if they received unexpected calls from BT or Talk Talk. But it also highlighted a separate scam in which a recorded message tried to frighten people into responding by claiming that HMRC are beginning legal proceedings against them.
