Grey skies failed to deter the crowds at Walls Show

Grey skies and rain greeted the early risers on the Westside on Saturday morning as they brought their amazing variety of exhibits to the Walls and District Agricultural Show.

Yet despite the conditions spirits were good and much friendly banter and laughter was to be heard across the show field.

As the morning progressed the judges set about their difficult task and by mid-morning the results were beginning to arrive at the secretary’s hut.

Given the bad weather that had preceded the show concerns had been expressed about the quality of locally grown produce. However, the judges were delighted at the standard of the flowers and vegetables and there was keen competition in several of the sections.

As is always the case at the show, it is the livestock sections that generate the greatest rivalries. This year the entrants with the biggest smiles included Sophie Ridland whose bull was awarded the accolade of Supreme Champion and Brian Ridland whose Shetland ram was given the Overall Champion’s trophy. Top pony on the day was that belonging to the Bergli Stud.

Whilst the sun failed to burst through the clouds this did not deter the crowds who came to enjoy a day of spectacles and activities.

The ever popular Castle in the Sky attracted a steady queue as did the opportunity to have a go at archery. The pony fancy dress parade brought smiles to everyone’s faces and more smiles were generated by the parade that saw the show princess and her attendants being driven round in ponies and traps accompanied by members of a Jarl Squad to live music.

Retiring Show President, Lauraine Manson said, “I am delighted with the way the day has gone and everyone involved have worked hard to make it a great success.”
