Tagging order for man who claimed bombs were on barges

A disgruntled former offshore worker who told emergency services bombs were planted on two accommodation vessels in Lerwick has avoided prison.

Gary Docherty, 44, of Salcoats, Ayrshire, called coastguards repeatedly to say two incendiary devices were set to explode on barges used to house gas plant workers and Sodexo company staff.

Docherty admitted threatening or abusive behaviour at his home in the town on 17th March 2015. He was formerly employed by Sodexo, Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard.

Docherty’s not guilty plea to texting a man the day before the alleged offence and threatening to rape him and his children was accepted by prosecutors.

He was also cleared of passing information to others that a bomb had been planted on the Bibby Stockholm barge and the Gemini accommodation ship berthed at Lerwick.

Sheriff Alistair Watson gave Docherty a six-month tagging order.
