First lamb sale underway at Shetland Mart

The first lamb sale for the 2016 season got underway at Shetland Mart this morning.
More than 20 lots were up today in Lerwick, with Shetland Livestock Marketing Group chairman Ronnie Eunson pleased with the trade, with a procurement buyer from Aldi along to see the sale.
“The trade has been very good,” he said.
“We have a bit of uplift on last year’s figures. It’s too early to say just how much that differential is going to be…lambs seem to be in keen demand, in particular the Suffolk cross and Texel cross out of the lambs that have been up so far.
“Unfortunately the Fair Isle lambs were not able to get out because of the sea conditions.
Supermarket chain Aldi was “spear-heading an attempt to add more prominence to the goods they have on sale,” he said.
“They are currently looking at a range of Highlands and Islands products. It will remain to be seen whether this translates into any firm intentions.”
