Russian bombers escorted away from area west of Shetland by RAF

British Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled to intercept two Russian Blackjack bombers west of Shetland yesterday.

The aircraft from the RAF’s Lossiemouth base escorted the Russian planes away from the UK area of interest. The Russian planes did not enter UK airspace.

Typhoon aircraft from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire were also dispatched as a precaution but were not required.

This incident comes at a time of increased Russian activity around areas of British interest.

In the past 12 months Russian aircraft and submarines have been detected around British waters and airspace on a number of occasions.
