Typhoon aircraft from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire were also dispatched as a precaution but were not required.
This incident comes at a time of increased Russian activity around areas of British interest.
In the past 12 months Russian aircraft and submarines have been detected around British waters and airspace on a number of occasions.
