Work to begin on pipe replacement in Lerwick’s Twageos area

There will be some disruption in the Twageos area of Lerwick for the next few weeks while Scottish Water carries out pipe refurbishment.

The work is part of a £4 million project to replace water mains in the isles over the coming years.

Scottish Water said the project, to be carried out by alliance partners Caledonian Water Alliance, would ensure customers enjoyed “a clean, fresh water supply long into the future”. It would include open cut replacement of the main in places.

The Lerwick work, to coincide with school holidays, will start at Gressy Loan on Thursday and progress, on a rolling programme, into Knab Road and finishing at the junction of Twageos Road. It is expected to last approximately six weeks.

Another section of the work is scheduled to start in Kantersted Road on Thursday 3rd November. That will then progress into Lower Sound and Seafield, again lasting about six weeks.

Scottish Water said the contractors may need to turn off the water supply of some customers for short periods during the work but anyone affected would be notified at least 48 hours in advance, detailing dates and times of the disruption and what to do.

There will also be some roadworks during the above dates, which could include the use of temporary traffic lights and some access and parking restrictions.

Scottish Water regional manager Ruaridh MacGregor said there may be some construction traffic and noise but contractors would do all they can to keep that to a minimum. There may also be the need to carry out some work during the night but if that was the case advance notice will be issued.

Mr MacGregor said: “This is part of a wider programme of work and dates and durations maybe subject to change depending on progress. The planned replacement works will then continue throughout the rest of the operational area in the next few years.

“This essential work is being done to make sure customers can continue to enjoy clean fresh drinking water, and to minimise the chance of bursts in the future.

“The objective for Scottish Water throughout these works is to minimise the impact on our customers and we would like to thank them In advance for their patience throughout the coming weeks.”

“A £4 million project to replace water mains in the isles”?

I’m surprised to see no mention of fibre optic cables being laid while the the roads, etc., are dug up?

That would pave the way for superfast broadband speeds of the future to be provided at greatly reduced cost and at a much earlier date?

I thought that was the purpose of the New Roads and Street Works Act, 1991- to ensure that things like that were thought about so that roads aren’t dug up unnecessarily often?

Would it not be wise to spend this money on replacing the age old water mains in the lerwick lanes rather than replacing a new “3” upvc” main layed in the late 1960s/ 1980.s .? Also Knab rd and pavement was newly tared last year…!!!!!
