Sandwick teens to ‘takeover’ Hay’s Dock Cafe
Third-year pupils at Sandwick Junior High School will host a “teens takeover” hospitality event at Hay’s Dock Cafe in Lerwick on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings this week, as part of their Health and Food Technology studies.
This is the third year of the event which has quickly established itself as one of the highlights of the school year and offers the pupils a chance to gain real-life experience of working in a restaurant.
Pupils have worked with the cafe staff to make decisions about budgets and menus, and complete health and safety training, all of which features as part of their studies in school. Over the course of the two evenings the pupils will prepare and serve a three-course meal for invited guests, including parents and school staff.
Sandwick Junior High School head teacher Stuart Clubb said: “This positive partnership with Hay’s Dock Cafe gives our S3 pupils a chance to develop their career related knowledge and skills.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to explore potential careers in the catering and hospitality industry, which fits really well with the national programme of Developing the Young Workforce in Scotland’s Schools.”
