Shoppers donate festive food parcels for foodbank

Supermarket shoppers donated 130 trays of food at the weekend which were delivered to the Shetland Foodbank on Monday.

Collections were made at Tesco in Lerwick where volunteers helped get the supplies ready for delivery.
Helpers included people from Inside Connections, Lerwick Celtic FC, Lerwick Community Council, Isleburgh Drama Group, and MSYP Kaylee Mouat.

David Grieve of Shetland Foodbank, which is part of the national Trussell Trust, and Tesco store manager Neil Connell arranged for the collection and Mr Connell said he was amazed by the generosity of Shetlanders.

Mr Grieve said: “A huge thank you to the hundreds of generous people who supported the Neighbourhood Food Collection at Tesco at the weekend. Some customers donated whole trolley loads of food but every single can donated is really appreciated.

“These donations will help people here in Shetland facing a crisis in which they are unable to feed themselves or their families. A huge thank you to the staff at Tesco who worked so hard to make the collection so successful. This has been a special collection but we need donations of food all year round and these can be made at Tesco, country shops or direct to the foodbank.”
